Andy Alagappan

Director

I’ve gained professional experience as a planner since 2009 working in diverse industries such as construction, oil & gas, iron/steel Mfg, and baggage handling systems. I’m a data and process driven, strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and commercial acumen.

With Fletcher Construction, I was the lead planner for complex mega projects, such as Auckland International Airport Phase 3 (>$400M), Commercial Bay, Auckland Central (>$700M), and Peka Peka to Otaki expressway (>$300M).

My specialised skill set is planning and delay analysis using various planning techniques such as CPM – Critical path methodology, and Linear Scheduling method, utilizing software such as Primavera P6 and Microsoft Projects.

I am listed as an “Expert Witness” as part of the Construction Dispute Resolution Board in New Zealand.

Oracle have featured my work in two articles: How Fletcher Construction uses Primavera P6 scheduling data to develop weekly planning tools and Fletcher Construction on planning and scheduling success.

What we do: our approach and services

At Strategic Planning Co. we believe effective project controls are best kept simple. We focus our efforts on:

  • Nailing the fundamentals
  • Establishing data structures
  • Enabling processes
  • Communicating effectively

Thereby focusing on what’s really important. i.e. completing the project on time, under budget and managing change effectively.

Read on for planning concepts utilised by Strategic Planning Co.

Effective project controls

The interface and interaction between the three critical elements (Design Information, Project Delivery Strategy, and Contract/commercials) is absolutely critical to making better-informed decisions, the ability to take proactive actions before projects are impacted, and providing more confidence and control over project delivery through well-established process and effective communication. Setting this up right from the get-go is something we strongly believe in at Strategic Planning Co.

Leading to the importance of establishing good data structures via “Diamond Project Modelling”.

Diamond project modelling

Collating well-structured inter-relatable data on a project is the key to effective project controls.

Imagine setting up a mini–Google specific to your project. One search box, with all the answers you were looking for on your project at your beck and call? How much time and money would that save you?

The answer is simple, collate well-structured data. Because…

“Without data you’re just another person with an opinion”

Here’s how we go about co-relating Time, Cost, Model/Design, and Organizational information at Strategic Planning Co. :

Testimonials

Malcolm McDonald

Project Director

Fletcher Construction

It was a pleasure working with Andy on the Waikato 50 WTP expansion project. He was very active in establishing strong systems at the outset, engaged with all ECI participates to build a strong baseline programme, and completed detailed progress reporting on a weekly basis helping the site team focus on the critical path for on time completion for this critical drought relief project. He integrated with and communicated to the wider team well. Thanks Andy.

Matt Stanford

Project Controls Manager / Design Interface Manager

Fletcher Construction

As Project Control Manager on the Waikato 50 project, I worked closely with Andy who held the project planner role. As a $150m drought response project which had to be designed, consented, procured, constructed, and commissioned in just 12 months (a process that would typically take 4 years), the effective management of the project programme was critical to the project success.

Andy was extremely knowledgeable in the practice of planning and quickly established a programme review cycle that allowed us to capture programme data accurately, measure variance, and report this effectively to the project execution and management teams. This robust review cycle also provided excellent historical data on delays and mitigations throughout the project and allowed us to justify EoT claims with the client.

Andy is a brilliant planner who is always willing to consider a request and develop a solution to provide the information requested. He will do so collaboratively, diligently, to a high standard, and deliver on time.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Andy on this project and would like to work with him again.

Led by Andy, Strategic Planning Co. provides clients with a service that allows their projects to succeed and knowledge to better build their own capabilities for future endeavours. I have had the pleasure of working on a project where Andy was brought on to help. Not only did he help build a coherent programme of works and succinct project controls cycle for me and the team to use; he also took the time to pass on his wealth of knowledge to train up those he worked with. His passion for all things project controls is amazing and his drive to allow clients to make data driven decision making (by providing them with the data) is top class. Finally, I had the privilege to see first-hand some of the tools and systems that Andy and the team have and implement in projects. It doesn’t matter what stage of a project you are in, the benefits and value that Strategic Planning Co. provides is well worth it!
